The topic of my article today is resilience. Something which I have learned over my many years in working with young people is the wonderful ability of the human species to cope with the challenges they encounter. One might think that after two and a half years of health-based uncertainties surrounding Covid-19, we might all be very jaded and starting to wain under the pressure of the unknown. What I have seen is students rallying and rising to the challenge, and largely, getting on with their lives.
For many students however, there are times where they will need additional support. During times of stress and crisis, young people look to the adults in their lives for guidance and for examples of how to manage their own stress. Open lines of communication are so very important during these times, acknowledging these feelings and working through them together. Talking over dinner, talking while driving to school, going for walks and doing things as a family work to support and reassure those who are struggling. Here at school we have a wonderful Pastoral Care team supported by our school psychologists who care deeply about our students. If you believe that your child is not coping, please let your child’s Head of House know. We have a huge wealth of expertise in this field, and are here to support you and your child through this time.
On 9 August, our Parent Partnership Series continues with Understanding and Supporting Your Teenager. This event is run by our psychologist, Dr Abigail Fargher and grammarian and dietician Georgia Houston. It will be held in the Science Atrium from 6.30pm. Following this, on 16 August, we have the next Parent Partnership breakfast (in the Reception building) on the subject of The Resilience Project where you will learn more about gratitude, empathy and mindfulness and how these can help grow resilience in your child. The link to Humanitix to reserve a place for either event is here, and we would love to see you there.
Have a lovely week everyone!
