Student News - Term 4 Week 8

As part of their HERO Signature Program, 60 Year 3 students recently competed in the Orienteering ACT Primary Schools Championship. Students competed in pairs, exploring the Barrenjoey Peninsula on the Molonglo River.

Our CGGS rowers are off to a hot start! Last weekend our rowers competed in two regattas. On Saturday at the Loreto Normanhurst regatta, CGGS finished with 20 podium finishes. On Sunday at the Loreto Kirribilli regatta, CGGS finished second overall on points and achieved another 20 podium finishes.

At the inaugural interschools badminton championship, CGGS Division 1–2 and Division 3–4 teams won their respective grand final against Canberra Grammar School. A special thank you to Burgmann College and Canberra Grammar School who participated in the championship, and Mr Adriaan van Wijk who was instrumental in starting CGGS' competitive badminton program in 2023.

Congratulations to Hazel (Y11) who was voted as the People's Choice Award winner at the Senior School Creative Arts and Technology Show for her artwork, alone. Isabella (Y11) was voted as runner-up. The CGGS Annual Works were also selected by Executive staff at the exhibition, and are currently on display in the Waterman Centre atrium before they will are framed and curated in 2024.

Recently several 10ASPIRE students attended the Accelerator for Enterprising Women Grand Final at Parliament House. The event is a national initiative that supports Australian women to create self-made career paths and pursue entrepreneurship as a viable career choice. Students heard pitches from five amazing women about their projects, which included an app for employee recognition and celebration, a breast pump bra that can be worn all day to allow women more access to returning to work, a virtual headset that doctors can use to advise rural health workers and increase access to good medical care, an app to increase attendance and improve the experience of visually impaired people at theatre events, and an app that coordinates food distribution and minimises waste. Kate Pounder, CEO of the Tech Council of Australia also spoke at the event and encouraged young women to start their own businesses and work in tech fields.

Aisha (Y10) has been awarded a place in the NGA Summer Arts Scholarship for gifted creative students. The artwork she submitted for her application, eternity begins with death, is a creative response to Ouroboros by Australian artist Lindy Lee and depicts a young girl laying in the centre of a star taking its last few breaths.

Congratulations to Ruby (Y11) who has been selected in the U17 Canberra Raiders rugby league development squad.

Recently Year 6 students participated in golf lessons at the Federal Golf Course. This activity forms part of their target games unit in the PE curriculum.

Year 10 Design and Digital Technology students travelled to ADFA recently for an interactive presentation by Dr Murray Simons. The presentation focused on how thinking skills explored in the classroom can be transferable and applied to the real world.
