"Apparently, no one mourns the wicked, and yet we all need a little moonlight". So were the words of wisdom heard at this year’s Encore Musical Theatre show ‘Magic and Mystery’. For two special nights audiences were entertained by CGGS' accomplished and emerging musical theatre performers. At its heart, Encore is about fostering talent, about giving students from Years 9–12 the opportunity to be immersed in all thing’s musical theatre. Students are driven by their own passion for entertaining and love of the musical theatre form. They do all the hard work themselves, taking charge of the show’s direction, working as an ensemble and selecting and working on individual pieces under the watchful eye of Mr Branson. Audiences were entertained by the large all-cast medley numbers from Wicked and The Addams Family Musical, which saw the creative vision of Caitlin (Y12) come to the stage: she devised and taught the choreography for both. From soaring solos and magical small-group numbers to spooky characters and mysterious mayhem, Encore Musical Theatre 2023 has given students the opportunity to build confidence and stage presence while developing life-long friendships and memories. Congratulations to all involved.
This week CGGS hosted the ACT Debating Union finals, where we had Senior teams (Years 9–10) and Advanced teams (Years 11–12) compete in the semi-finals. Both the Senior and Advanced teams advanced to and won their respective grand finals. Serina (Y12) was awarded best speaker in the grand final, and crowned the best speaker in the ACT Debating Union for 2023.
Several students competed at the Australian Rowing Indoor Championships recently, which were held at our lakeside facility, Yhuuramulum. CGGS finished with 12 national medals.
Recently our Junior School hosted a staff v student basketball game. Jade Melbourne and Nicole Munger from the UC Capitals joined us to officiate and provide advice to our budding athletes. As expected, the students swept the staff by a large points margin!
Ava (Y11) played her first Australian Women's Ice Hockey League (AWIHL) recently, notching an assist in the game. Ava has also been selected for the World Women U18 team, where she will compete at the 2024 World Championships in Spain.
