Student News Term 4 Week 4

This week’s highlights showcase our student's talents in mathematics, engagement with political discourse and sporting camaraderie.

Stellar results in the Australian Mathematics competition.

Mathematical brilliance was on full display as 117 of our students participated in the prestigious Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC). This 75-minute competition challenges students to think critically and solve complex problems.

CGGS achieved outstanding results—our students received 44 Certificates of Credit and 30 Certificates of Distinction. Ava (Year 8), Zoe (Year 8) and Kate (Year 9) achieved High Distinctions, placing these students in the top 3% of their cohort nationwide. Zoe (Year 8) also received the Best in School Award with a remarkable z-score of 2.61.

National History Challenge

Two of our Senior School students were recognised at the National History Challenge held this week, which saw over 6,000 entries from across Australia. Tess (Year 10) received a Silver Award, placing her among the top three Year 10 entries in the ACT. Ava (Year 9) achieved outstanding success with three certificates:

  • A Silver Award for her Year level
  • A Silver Award for the special category Australia’s Wartime Experiences
  • A Gold Certificate as the top Year 9 historian in the ACT.

A conversation on gender and Politics with Senator Sarah Hanson-Young.

On Thursday, Year 11 English students welcomed Senator Sarah Hanson-Young to their classroom. The session aligned perfectly with their study of gender representations in texts.

Senator Hanson-Young shared her journey into politics, the challenges and triumphs of women in leadership and the ongoing conversation around women’s rights. She encouraged students to engage critically with political issues and foster meaningful discussions on topics that matter.

UC Capitals take the court at the student-teacher game

Excitement reached new heights as UC Capitals players, including an Olympian, joined our student-teacher basketball game in the Junior School Hall this week. The event, always a highlight of the Term, brought the entire School community together with cheers, claps and plenty of team spirit. Students had the chance to learn tips from the pros and celebrate the joy of sportsmanship—the atmosphere was electric!

Farewell to CGGS 2024 student leaders

Tuesday’s Senior School Assembly marked a poignant moment as our 2024 Captain, Vice-Captain and Senior Council delivered their final addresses. The speeches from Reshmi (Year 12) and Bronte (Year 12) were particularly moving and inspiring, reflecting on a year of remarkable achievement and growth. In a symbolic ceremony, the leadership roles were officially passed to the incoming 2025 Senior Council.

We are deeply grateful to Reshmi, Bronte and the entire Senior Council for their exceptional service and leadership throughout 2024—they have left an indelible mark on our School community.
