Three classes of Year 8 Design Tech completed the term unit on super foods last week. The students celebrated with a cookie bake-off to combat the cold weather.
Year 11 and 12 Global Studies students welcomed volunteers from UN Youth Australia to CGGS, who facilitated student participation in a Model United Nations (UN) Security Council. The senior students were joined by three courageous Year 9 students who stepped in at the last minute for the experience. Each student was assigned a country to represent, given a Country Brief, and debated the proposed Resolution 6436 (2023): The Question of International Intervention of Cyber Terrorism. Unfortunately, due to the veto powers of Russia, and despite hotly contested amendments, the Resolution did not pass. Students needed to act in a diplomatic manner in order to negotiate agreements and then speak publicly and answer questions, all the while learning about the operations of the United Nations.
Students participated in the Computational and Algorithmic Thinking (CAT) competition this week. CAT is a one-hour problem solving competition designed to encourage student curiosity and promote multiple modes of thinking. CGGS had 36 students participating this year. Congratulations to Zoe (Y9) who received a Certificate of High Distinction. Well done to all our students who participated!
Congratulations to Muntaha (Y11) on being invited to participate in the Australian Mathematical Olympiad Committee (AMOC) Senior Contest on 15 August. The AMOC Senior Contest is a challenging competition that identifies students' problem solving abilities for potential selection into other Olympiad-level competitions.
Congratulations to Ash (Y10) and Eleanor (Y10), winners of the 2023 CIT Bridge Challenge, taking home first place in Efficiency against 14 other finalists. Their bridge carried over 400x its weight, holding 250kg.
The Humanities and Languages Faculties hosted an exhibition on Monday by Year 7 students titled 'The Museum of Ancient Societies'. The students provided their own unique perspectives for what they learnt for the term. It was an engaging opportunity for students and parents alike.
House Sing took place today featuring a decade-spanning list of memorable tunes. The students truly took pride in rehearsing their performances which featured elaborate choreography and themed costumes. Well done to Waverley House, who won first place with their rendition of 'Livin' On A Prayer'. Students also participated in a range of exciting activities for Creative Minds. Students from Years 6 to 12 had the opportunity to try their hand at dance, creative writing, drama, STEM challenges, visual arts, and games, to name a few.
