Student News - Term 1 Week 3

CGGS had a very successful weekend at the NSW Rowing Championships recently. Our rowers achieved a Gold in the SG 4+, Bronze in the SG 4x+, Bronze U17 8+, fourth in the U16 4x+ and fifth in the U19 4x. Well done to our rowing team for their outstanding results!

Jessica (Y4) recently competed at the Australian Oztag State Championships in Sydney. Her team won five of their six games and made the quarter-finals. Jess was also awarded MVP for one of her games.

Willow (Y6) has been selected as the ACT Touch Football U12s Captain for the NSW Junior State Cup. A Daily Telegraph report on Willow says 'The team captain leads her team from the front, running hard on every play and giving her teammates confidence. A middle player, Willow is described as 'the team pocket rocket', bringing intelligence, elusiveness and dangerous attacking qualities to the team'.

On Tuesday, 14 February the IB Environmental Systems and Societies class travelled to ANU to hear a discussion on Electrification in Sweden and Australia. Both countries have a shared initiative to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050 and this was discussed by government representatives from both countries, an industry expert and a researcher, who assessed what needed to happen next on the road to electrification. Johan Forssell, Swedish Minister for International Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade gave an interesting perspective when he talked about the broader positive effects of a greener future. The highlight for the students, though, was meeting Her Royal Highness Crown Princess Victoria, which included a brief conversation!

Our Year 11 and 12 Arts students participated in an immersive and inspiring arts camp recently. Travelling to Bundanon to visit Arthur Boyd's historic homestead and Art museum, students curated their own exhibit using the museum's 'Siteworks' as their inspiration, which takes a focus on sustainability and sense of place through contemporary works. Students also participated in an Indigenous arts workshop run by artist Jaz Corr and developed an ‘internal weather report’ of their experiences using natural dyes, bushfire charcoal, red ochre, bark distillation and dandelion.

Recently Year 12 Exercise Science students visited the University of Canberra Research Institute for Sport & Exercise (UCRISE) to conduct practical laboratory testing protocols. This forms part of their Anatomy & Physiology unit which investigates exercise physiology, acute responses to exercise, cardiorespiratory data and performance demands. Alex (Y12) did a great job testing for oxygen update, VO2 max efficiency and lactate threshold levels.
