This afternoon we have released the results of our elections for the 2023 Senior Council. Firstly, I would like to congratulate the successful candidates who have demonstrated their commitment and their willingness to take on these significant responsibilities in their final year of school. The selection process is a rigorous one, and requires a written statement, student voting, an assembly speech for the shortlisted students and finally an interview with senior members of staff. The calibre of all the nominees was exceptional this year, and will ensure the superb work of the 2022 Senior Council continues next year. Every student who put themselves forward for a position is to be commended for the time and energy they put into this process, and for being brave enough to stand for one or more of the positions. While it is inevitable that not everyone will gain a role, the opportunities for leadership do not end with these results.
In addition to the Senior Council leadership positions, we will begin the process for the Election B roles in two weeks time, and I urge all Year 11 students to consider putting themselves forward. Girls do not always see themselves in leadership roles unless they are already accomplished in the area. Please encourage your daughter to consider standing for any of the roles if they are interested. The most rapid leadership growth and development happens when someone undertakes a position of responsibility. And while they may initially feel that they are unprepared for the position, this will not last forever. To ensure students are successful in their roles, we work with them to enable them to speak confidently, and to develop the traits of leaders they admire.
In our interviews this week with potential school captains, one of the questions asked of them was “Who is a leader you admire, and what is it about their leadership which resonates with you?”. Interestingly, two candidates spoke of their admiration of Emma Watson. Both admired her for using her fame to raise the profile of issues surrounding gender inequity worldwide. One reflected that Emma has never been drawn into drama like so many in the public eye. She observed that Emma’s own conduct has been beyond reproach while putting her energy into promoting positive change through campaigns such as HeforShe. Her observations are insightful — and I hope we can all learn from Emma’s example.
With half the term behind us already, and the IB trial exams now done for the Year 12 IB students, I wish everyone a restful weekend and a productive fortnight ahead.
