Student Achievements

Once again, CGGS performed strongly at the Australian Individual Debating and Public Speaking Championships (AIDPSC) and Speakfest.

Students from across Australia compete in four categories (Debate, Impromptu Speaking, Persuasive or After Dinner Speaking and Interpretive Reading) in the AIDPSC and are awarded a combined score for their performances. The top 10 students are then selected to compete in the World Championships. Speakfest runs in conjunction with the AIDPSC and is for younger students.

Congratulations to Serina (Y11), who placed in the top 10 in the AIDPSC and will compete at the World Championships next year, and Ridhima (Y8), who placed in the top 10 for Speakfest.

Over the holidays, Annie (Y7) played for the U13 ACT hockey team at the National Championships in Hobart.

Congratulations to Jade (Y8) who was one of 24 Australian rules football players selected to play in the Super 24 Series for the GWS Giants. Jade competed in a state-based carnival that saw the best players in NSW travel to Albury to compete in the first ever Super 24 Series.

200 CGGS students competed at the Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC) recently, with several achieving outstanding results. Congratulations to Katie (Y7) who received a High Distinction Certificate and achieved the Best in School award with a z-score of 2.6. Tara (Y9), Rose (Y10), Sophia (Y11) and Bella (Y12) also received High Distinction Certificates, placing them in the top 3% across the country. Overall, CGGS students received five High Distinction Certificates, 33 Distinction Certificates and 77 Credit Certificates.

In August, Maddie (Y11), while playing the violin, competed with the Australian National University’s Winther Quartet in Musica Viva’s ‘Strike A Chord’ National Chamber Music Championship for secondary school ensembles. The Winther Quartet was selected as one of 12 finalists to perform at the Melbourne Recital Centre. Maddie has also been asked to play with the Canberra Symphony Orchestra (CSO) for their upcoming concert at Llewelyn Hall on Saturday, 29 October. As part of the CSO mentoring program for aspiring young musicians, Maddie will play on front desk of first violins, alongside CSO concert master Kirsten Williams.
