Sports update - Term 4 Week 5

Term 4 is flying by! We are already approaching the halfway point in many of the competitive summer sports. The sports department have been busy preparing Term 1 co-curricular and competitive sport, with information regarding enrolment for our programs in 2023 open next week (Week 6). Please keep your eye on Agora where the process of enrolment, important information, training schedules and dates for 2023 sports will be made available.

This week during the Senior School assembly we recognised student achievements in sport from the winter season. Teachers in Charge of each sport had the opportunity to celebrate students who have made significant contributions to sport at CGGS in service and excellence. Congratulations to all the award recipients for their contribution towards the CGGS sport program. Further information on the criteria for selection of these awards can be found on Agora.

Head of Sport

Water polo

The Term 4 summer water polo competition is well underway, with two teams in the interschools competition representing CGGS. Many of the players from the Term 1 competition have returned, ensuring there is plenty of strong skill on display. The new players in each team are quickly learning the rules and skills required for the sport, which include the high level of fitness required to stay above the water while swimming with a ball. Students are commended on the positive energy among the teams and continued development of teamwork. Keep up the great work.

Basketball mid-season report (Mr Aidan Barnett - TiC Basketball)

Last weekend we passed the halfway mark of the summer basketball season, in which 11 teams (almost 100 students) have taken to the court. Through the first four weeks, our students have represented the school with grit, pride and great sportsmanship. Though there have been varied levels of success on the scoreboard, each team and player has displayed tremendous growth in both skill and game understanding in such a short period of time.

Team in the spotlight: U12 Division 2 Lightning

The U12 Lightning team have found themselves 3-1 through the first four rounds. This team has five players who have not played basketball previously and have collectively made huge strides each week. It has been fantastic to see these students grow as players so rapidly, while connecting as teammates and enjoying being active.

I would also like to acknowledge the 25+ students who put their hand up to trial for ACT Representative Programs. To do so can be a challenging experience, though you have each represented yourselves and the school basketball program in such a positive light!

Touch football – mid season report (Ms Raylee Kelly - TiC Touch Football)

Last week Willow (Y5), Bella (Y6), Madeleine (Y6) and Grace (Y6) represented ACT School Sport at the National Titles. The girls U12 team did exceptionally well, finishing with a bronze medal. Well done, girls!

We have commenced the summer season of touch football, which is being played in Term 4 and Term 1. We have six teams across the school participating in the Deakin competition. This year we have our first senior mixed team combined with Marist College which is a great way for students to develop their skills and enjoy socialising with the Marist boys. Fingers crossed there is no more rain on match days.

Summer netball news (Ms Jenny Hall - TiC Netball)

Our summer netball spirit hasn’t been dampened by the rain! Sixteen teams have enjoyed the first four rounds of the mini competition with fun, fitness and friendship-building the main highlights. There have been great games around the courts on Monday and Tuesday evenings. Shout out to our new players in the Year 2 Silver Sparkles, Year 3 Yoyo’s, Year 4 Sherbets, Year 5 Topaz and Year 6 Green. Their smiles and enthusiasm have been wonderful to watch. Sophie and Imogen (Y12 - Netball Captains) have been actively supporting the Year 4 teams. A big thank you to Sophie for her leadership and commitment to netball as Captain this year. She has left a wonderful legacy at the school and we wish her the very best for the future. Imogen and Charlotte (Y10) will be our 2023 Netball Captains. Summer netball fixtures continue throughout Term 4, with final games on Monday and Tuesday in Week 9.

Tae Kwon Do interstate training day this weekend (Sam Papasidero – TiC Tae Kwon Do)

CGGS Tae Kwon Do are heading Interstate for the Inter Club Open Training Day in Albury, NSW. Students have been powering through the belts levels with the most recent grading resulting in 16 eighth Grades (yellow belts), 17 seventh Grades (yellow belt with green tips) and two sixth Grades (green belts).

The event in Albury will feature black belt instructors from a range of clubs in NSW, Victoria and the ACT. CGGS is the only South-east Australian Tae Kwon Do Club in the ACT and will be a great opportunity for our students to practice their skills and learn some new ones at the Albury training session.

Our own Senior Instructor fourth dan Sam Papasidero and black belt Instructor Lauren Richardson will be running some of the group sessions on the day along with other senior instructors. There will be self-defence drills, kicking practice, board breaking and non-contact sparring throughout the day.

We are looking forward to a fun packed day out in the country, building upon our skills in the martial arts.

"Get ready. We are training.”

Rowing update (Caroline Pijpers - Head of Rowing)

CGGS Rowers had their first competition for the season at the Australian Indoor Rowing Competition. We had fantastic results across the day, with the following girls and teams receiving national medals.

  • Annie (Y7) - First U14 500m
  • Grace (Y7) - Third U14 500m
  • Eliza (Y10) - Third U19 2000m
  • Caitlin (Y11) – Third U19 1000m
  • U19 relay teams - Second and third
  • Sophie (Y8) - First U16 1000m

CGGS also had a further 20 rowers place in the top 10 in Australia in their age division. It was great to see the comradery between all the rowers throughout the event.

This coming weekend on 12 November, CGGS will be competing in the CGGS and Marist regatta, the first regatta for the season. It will be a fun and exciting day of racing for everyone, especially the new rowers who have never raced. If you have some spare time on Saturday, please come to Weston Park between 7.30am and 2.30pm and cheer on the girls.
