“Little did I know that three directors would be responsible for that epic moment in my life. They fired my imagination, and they captured my heart. That's what can happen when you direct a movie. You can change a mind. You can change the trajectory of a life, of a career. You can capture a heart. But you can't do it alone. And directors, tonight's directors all know the possibilities. They know what's at stake. It's why they give their precious time. It's why they choose to fight through the long days, and the longer nights, and the endless questions, and the inevitable second guessing that comes from those who would do it differently if given half a chance.”
These are the words spoken by Kevin Costner at the 2022 Academy Awards, where he was presenting the award for Best Director. His simple yet powerful message resonated with me, as he has so beautifully captured what we are also here to do as teachers. Every day, our teachers at CGGS have the ability to do for our students what these three directors did for Kevin Costner. We approach our classes with the goal of teaching and developing students to support them on their pathway to independence and self-realisation.
Teachers understand the significance of what they do. They too can change the trajectory of a young person’s life or career, and they know the possibilities available for each student in every classroom. Teachers give generously of their time, well beyond every school day, to not only support the academic learning of students but to support them in the face of challenge and adversity. Teachers face endless questions, from students and their own internal dialogue, but keep on giving of themselves in the pursuit of success for every child. Teachers know they cannot educate alone, and that parents, friends and extended family members are vital to the development of each young person. Teachers rely on the support of their peers to find strength, energy, and wisdom in responding to the needs of their role each day.
As we approach the end of Term 1, I would like to recognise and acknowledge the work of the CGGS teaching staff, for all they do each day for the young people of our School. Thank you also to the parents and family members who walk alongside us in partnership, shaping our young people to be the best they can be. We have had so much to be thankful for this term, with a range of sporting events, co-curricular activities, teaching and learning, and excursions taking place. Next week, I am particularly looking forward to the Easter bonnet parade in the Junior School and the Easter Chapel in the Senior School, as well as the Fun Run activities to end the term next Friday.
I wish all our students and staff a restful break, with the chance to re-energise, ready for Term 2. Happy Easter to all CGGS families.
