Engineering a healthier world

2021 Canberra Girls Grammar School (CGGS) graduate Abigail Worswick dreams of one day turning her passion for technology into developing better health solutions for Australians.

Abigail, who will commence a double degree in Computer Science and Engineering at the University of New South Wales (UNSW) this year, says that while her opportunities at the completion of her studies are broad, she knows what her goal is.

“I will have so many opportunities available to me once I finish my degree. I can work as a software engineer, or as a data scientist, or in cyber security. But my passion lies in the medical field. There are always gaps in medicine, and I want to do my part in closing those gaps. My goal is to start my own company developing technology for medical solutions.”

Abigail was the joint-Dux of CGGS in 2021, with an ATAR of 99.6. She shares this accolade with classmate and friend, Ashwini Sivakumar. Both girls are committed to improving the lives of those in their community, with Ashwini hoping to study medicine in 2022.

“I was really happy with the results I received for my University Clinical Aptitude Test (UCAT). At university, I’m hoping I can try out different specialties to decide what to do long term, but I definitely want to be a doctor.” said Ashwini.

Abigail and Ashwini’s ATAR score was closely followed by Amy Huang, who studied the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme, an international curriculum that results in a qualification recognised by leading universities around the world. Amy received the School’s top IB score of 43 from 45, equivalent to an ATAR of 99.45.

The combined median ATAR for BSSS and IB equivalent was 86.23, the highest median ATAR achieved by a CGGS cohort in the last six years. The School’s outstanding results also showed that one in five Year 12 CGGS students received an ATAR above 95 in 2021.

  • 11 students (9.2%) received an ATAR greater than 98.
  • 23 students (19.2%) received an ATAR greater than 95.
  • 44 students (36.7%) received an ATAR greater than 90.

CGGS Acting Principal Julie Jorritsma praised the students’ character and celebrated their outstanding achievement.

“These young women, their attitudes and achievements, are a product of our strong school values – inclusion, courage, integrity,” Ms Jorritsma said.

“Not only have they worked diligently to achieve an exceptional ATAR, they have also been outstanding role models for all at CGGS.

“Their sense of service, empathy, compassion and generosity in giving back to the community is truly inspiring.”
