Co-curricular update

Drama update

Year 7-9 students performed in Summer Shorts last Thursday and Friday. The short plays were directed by students in Years 10-12. All students worked extremely well together to put on a fun filled night full of laughter. In the intermission, sugar cookies made by the Year 9-10 Food Technology class were provided as a light refreshment.

The Encore Musical Theatre Cabaret Performance will be held at the end of Week 2 Term 3. A number of students in Years 7-12 have prepared a range of musical theatre repertoire for your enjoyment, which will include solos, small groups and whole-cast numbers. This promises to be a great showcase of our students’ theatrical talent!

You can purchase tickets to the show here.

Dance Company update

Congratulations to the students of the CGGS Dance Company who performed in the annual Winter Concert on Thursday, 9 June in the Senior School Hall. Huge thanks to Brielle Papa (2019 Graduate) for her amazing work with the Year 1-4 students, and to our student assistant teachers, Sarah Diplock (Y11, Dance Vice-Captain) and Tara Strickland (Y10).

One guest described the evening as “a tight program of great variety with committed dancers and lovely costuming.” Many agreed that our dance students put on a professional show that left the audience feeling energised.

It was wonderful to see the support for Dance from parents, staff and students alike. Our students are eager to experience all that the Dance Company has to offer and pursue their passion for dance.

Moving forward, Dance Captain Hollie Teer (Y12) is developing her solo work performed at the concert, The Waiting Room, into an ensemble piece with the Year 7-9 Dance Company. This group of budding young dancers will perform in the upcoming competition, the Brindabella Dance Festival, in September. Good luck, girls!

Hollie will also be performing the role of Paris from the classic tale of Romeo and Juliet, alongside Izzie Becvarik (Y11) as the Nurse, in UNRAVEL by Training Ground in July.

Congratulations to all of the dancers who performed solos at the Canberra Dance Festival over the June long weekend. Bella Lennon (Y8) received first place in eight soloist categories in three different genres for both jazz and tap, as well as contemporary. Holly Mere (Y7) placed first in the 12-years and under Classical Scholarship, which requires students to perform four solo pieces, including en pointe.

New Class

In Semester Two, students in Years 6-10 can enroll in Hip Hop on Tuesday afternoons taught by Brielle. Please email maree.cronin@cggs.act.edu.au to enroll. This class will begin in Week 1 of Term 3.

CGGS had 21 students qualify for the SSACT Cross Country Championships last week. Of these students, four placed in their age groups. A special mention to Lucy Hincksman (First - 18 years), who has been undefeated in this event since Year 7. This is an incredible achievement. Congratulations to Charlotte Smyth (Second- 14 years), Rosemary Norton (Second - 16 years) and Ellie Meggitt (17 years). Several of our students finished in the top 10, qualifying for the Australian School Sport National Cross-Country Championships, in South Australia in August.

Sport over the holidays

Please be aware that many of our competitive sports will continue over the holiday period. If you have leave planned, please inform your coach as soon as possible. Hockey, netball and basketball will not train over the holiday period.

Training will resume for all competitive sports in Week 1 Term 3.

Water Polo Swimwear is now available for pre-order at the School Shop

Rowing update

A big congratulations to Grammarian Zara Collisson (2019) on her selection to represent Australia in the U23 coxed four, at the World U23 Championships in Italy at the end of July. Zara is currently studying at the University of Michigan on a rowing scholarship.

This coming week CGGS has three grammarians rowing at the Henley Royal Regatta in England. Grace Turner (2020) & Olivia Nattey (2021) will be representing Sydney University in the Island Challenge Cup. Taylor Caudle (2015) will be representing Oxford Brookes in the Town Challenge Cup.

We wish them the best of luck for the regatta. If you would like to watch the regatta, it will be live streamed on YouTube starting Tuesday, 28 June until Sunday, 3 July.

Lunchtime sport

Term 2 saw the introduction of weekly lunchtime sports by the Sports Captains. These activities included badminton in the quad (which was very popular!), hula hooping, skipping, volleyball and much more. Despite the cold weather, lunchtime sports successfully invigorated the sports culture at CGGS. It was a blast seeing girls movin’ and groovin’!

Netball Report – Sophie Martin (Netball Captain)

CGGS is well and truly into the Netball season. There has been notable success for all teams. Shout out to Year 8 Emeralds and Year 12 Giants who are each top of the ladder in their respective divisions. A special mention to Year 8 Firebirds who came away with their first Division 1 win of the season over the weekend, congratulations girls! On Tuesday, 21 June the Year 3/4 Netball Gala Day was held. Despite the wet weather, the Pink Poppies played very well.
