Academic update
Congratulations to the Year 5 and Year 6 da Vinci Decathlon teams, who recently won the ACT regional competition. The da Vinci Decathlon is an academic competition that is designed to stimulate the minds of students, with team members collaborating to answer questions and solve problems in Engineering, Mathematics, English, Art and Poetry, Cartography, Creative Producers, Ideation, Code breaking, Science and Legacy.
As winners of the regional event, both teams were invited to participate in the NSW State Finals. Year 5 competed against 72 teams, while Year 6 competed against 81. Our students worked well together on the day and were certainly stretched in their thinking to answer challenging questions in a limited time frame.
Congratulations to the Year 5 team who came first overall in the Engineering discipline and third in Art and Poetry. Both teams have worked exceptionally hard to prepare for the events, and we are proud to acknowledge their efforts and achievements in the 2022 da Vinci Decathlon.

Music update
It has been a busy time for The Music Academy in Term 2. Last Friday, we hosted our Orchestras Concert, which included performances from Stringy Bachs, Alma, Holland and Sutherland String Orchestras, Glanville-Hicks Symphony Orchestra, Celtic and the Kain and Williams Guitar Ensembles. All of these groups were spectacular, but a stand out item was Vitali’s Chaconne for Violin and Orchestra by the Sutherland Chamber Orchestra, with a solo by Ziqi Gu (Y8). Congratulations to all staff and students involved in this event! In particular, a big thank you to Ms Harvey-Martin, who not only coordinated this concert, but expertly conducted and accompanied several ensembles.
In Term 2 we also commenced our Recital Series program. Thus far we have hosted our Year 9 and 10 Recital, Senior School Recital and Year 6 Recital. This week, we will hold our Year 7 and 8 Recital and Year 5 Recital. Congratulations to all students who performed at these recitals. Thank you also to our dedicated instrumental studies teachers for helping our students prepare.
At the beginning of the term, we were fortunate to host the ACT Anglican Schools Band Festival. This event saw our school’s Holst Concert Band combine with the intermediate concert bands from Canberra Grammar School and Radford College. Students performed two combined pieces under the baton of Major Darren Cole, the Executive Officer of the Australian Army Band. This was an enjoyable evening and it was great to see the students perform together.
Regarding upcoming events, our annual Choral Concert will be held on Sunday, 19 June from 3.00pm – 5.00pm in the Senior School Hall. Please join us for an enjoyable afternoon of song and harmony. Ensembles performing include Minisingers, Les Petits Chanteurs, Cantantes, Coro da Camera, Chorale and Bella Voce Chapel Choir. Tickets are free, but it is important to register your attendance. Please book your tickets here. Our Friends of Music team will be selling baked goods with tea, coffee and hot chocolate prior to the concert and during intermission.

Sport update
Commitment to Sport (Training and Games)
Sport teaches discipline and commitment. These skills are important building blocks for everything we do in life. Learning to take responsibility and being a dedicated student in all facets of school life are great skills to develop. As we move into the cooler weather and exam periods, we have noticed a decline in attendance for training and games. This is a timely reminder to ensure students stay committed to the co-curricular activities they have committed to. Please ensure that you communicate to your coach or the Teacher in Charge of your sport if you are unwell or unavailable. We appreciate family support to ensure our students commit to their sporting endeavors.
Rugby Gala Day
Congratulations to our Year 11 and 12 students who participated in the Rugby 7’s Brumbies Gala Day last Friday at Southwell Park. CGGS had some big wins and several tightly contended matches, finishing third overall. Well done to our students for showing grit, determination and wonderful sportsmanship.
ASC Cross Country
The CGGS Cross Country team found success at the recent ASC carnival. The team was crowned ASC Female Champions, winning the overall point score. Congratulations to the 21 students who have progressed to the 13 and over SSACT Cross Country at Mt Stromlo on Wednesday, 15 June.
South/Western Cross Country Carnival
There was a modified course for this year’s zone cross country carnival, due to the wet weather. Our CGGS Junior School students did a wonderful job representing the School. Several students were selected to the School Sports ACT Cross Country carnival, to compete next Wednesday, 15 June. Congratulations to the following students:
No sport over the June long weekend
A reminder that there will be no competitive sport over the long weekend. Please enjoy your weekend off!
ASC Swimming nominations

Hockey News from Emily McHugh (Hockey Captain)
Both of our CGGS Hockey Teams have had an amazing start to the season, with our U18/2 team currently second on the ladder, and our U13/2 team placed third. They are certainly setting the standard in their respective divisions! The U13/2 team have won their last three games and have scored seven goals so far, which shows a huge improvement as a team this season. The U18/2 team have been on the ball (literally) with many of their games uncontested wins due to amazing teamwork and enthusiasm from both new and returning players. It would be remiss not to mention all of our supporters, parents, players and coaching staff who make CGGS Hockey possible. Thank you for everything.
