Students at the Junior School found a very special mural in the playground when they returned this year.
Titled 'Anything is possible', the mural was painted by Wens Arts' Wendy Rix, an Australian Contemporary Indigenous Artist.
Wendy says of the painting, "In the centre is the gathering/meeting area representing the school community. Inside that is one of the symbols for woman (a person is the U shape, and she has a digging stick and coolamon). From the left going into the centre and out to the right is the journey each child undertakes coming into school life at Canberra Girls Grammar Junior School. Mountains are my representation of obstacles and challenges and the good times of our lives. Cracked mud represents my connection to where I am from, as well as each persons connection to where they are from and to the school itself. Footprints lead out of the journey, as the young trailblazers go on their way."
Wendy has elegantly reflected the values of CGGS in her work - the digging stick and coolamon accompanying the symbol for woman metaphorically reference our mission to equip our students with the skills to become resilient, compassionate, critical thinking leaders. The Junior School House colours (blue, purple, yellow, orange) also feature heavily throughout the painting.
CGGS is committed to actively work alongside First Nations people for reconciliation and justice. Thank you to Wendy Rix for this spectacular painting, which acknowledges the Ngunnawal people as the traditional keepers of the land on which our School resides and who inspire our community through their wisdom, spirituality and experience.
